Looks I Love // Vacationing in Style

I may be vacationing a la my childhood home, but I was inspired nonetheless to delve into the world of fancy, luxury hotels. It probably had something to do with this Design Milk article about Hotel Not Hotel in Amsterdam.

As I have mentioned before, I'm still not entirely decided if I'll end up going commercial or residential. If I were to go to commercial, I've been thinking bars, hotels and restaurants would be the way for me to go. I find it intriguing how a space can leave a lasting impact on someone's takeaway of the brand.

So, after reading said article, I wanted to share a list of hotels, big and small, that I found pretty awesome:

1 // The Liberty, a Luxury Collection Hotel [Boston, MA]

For starters, not only does this space look amazing, but it's even more amazing when you learn that the hotel is an old prison. I love the concept of making something old, new again, and the designer, Alexandra Champalimaud, knocked this one out of the park (even winning a couple awards to boot).

2 //  The Crawford Hotel - Denver Union Station [Denver, CO]

Similar to The Liberty, The Crawford Hotel is a beautiful re-use of an existing building. Still acting as a main public transportation hub, Denver Union Station's main lobby now also acts as the guest lobby for the The Crawford Hotel. Designed by JG Johnson Architects and Tryba Architects, the boutique hotel beautifully incorporates the historic elements of the building into a modern, boutique hotel.

3 // Chetzeron [Crans-Montana, Switzerland]

Again with the adaptive re-use of a space (Are you starting to pick up on a trend? - I think re-use and renovations are the way to go), Chetzeron is a converted gondola station that sits almost 7,000 feet above sea level in the Swiss Alps. It's my quintessential ski vacation resort and is only accessed by foot, skis or snowmobile. And, my oh my, just take a look at that view!!!

4 // 1888 Hotel [Sydney, Australia]

Moving to the great Down Under, 1888 Hotel in Sydney won the "Architecture-Historical Building" Award at the Asia Hotel Design Awards 2015. Formerly a woolstore built in 1888, the space was renovated by SHED Architects and Space Control Design who payed homage to the building's historical charm by restoring the internal ironbark beams, pillars and historical windows.

5 // Icehotel [JukkasjÀrvi, Sweden]

It's ice. And every year, it's a little bit different. Because it's ice… and it melts. I'm a fan. I want to stay there - I don't care if it's freezing!

Built every year between October and December, Icehotel is open from December through April and offers guests a balmy bedroom temperature of 23 degrees Fahrenheit. If that's too cold for you, there are warm rooms as well … but what's the fun in that!?
